The Toyota Cup has been the closest thing to a Club's World Champion title, until the inception of the FIFA World Club Championship in January of 2000. It has been disputed since 1960, between the South American champion of the Libertadores Cup and the European champion of the Champion's League.

It started as a home-and-away dispute, and in 1980 changed to a single game played in Tokio, sponsored by Toyota.

So far, the European clubs have been outplayed by the South American ones, both in the 1960-1979 and the 1980-1999 period.
